Comment:
Enteromonas-like cyst from a faecal specimen (TEM). These cysts were oval with 2 nuclei and 5-8 microns from a specimen from a 50 year old female with 2 months history of diarrhoea following a trip to Africa. They were present in 4 stool samples presented over a 6 week period (see Trichrome stain slides- 1 09, 11, 12) . Also present were Entamoeba coli trophozoites and cysts. No pathogenic organisms were isolated and the cause of her symptoms was not identified. These small cysts were considered to be Enteromonas hominis cysts which are 4 - 10 x 4 - 6 microns, elongate or oval with 1 - 4 nuclei, usually 2 at opposite ends of cyst. They resemble Endolimax nana cyst, although this rarely has only 2 nuclei. These parasites are often not reported because of their small size and the difficulties in identification under LM. They are considered non-pathogenic but are little studied. EM was performed on this specimen to assist in identification. Enteromonas hominis diagnosis was confirmed when the final specimen also contained typical Enteromonas trophozoites (see 12 04, 05 and 1 02). (EM by Deb Stenzel)
